PTC Resettable Fuses, also called Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) fuses, are devices that serve as overcurrent protection. Whereas traditional one-shot fuses are designed to “blow” when an overcurrent condition occurs, PTC Resettable Fuses are able to be reset over and over again. This allows the part to “trip” or go into a non-conductive state when the current limit is exceeded but then resume normal operation without requiring replacement.

The MF-RG400-AP is a PTC Resettable Fuse specifically designed for automotive applications. It was designed to provide reliable, high-performance protection against over-currents in battery powered applications.

The MF-RG400-AP has a wide range of operating temperature ratings, from -40˚C to +125˚C and can withstand over-currents up to 44 amps in 4/10 second. It features a current rating of 4.4A with a hold current of 3.8A, making it a suitable option for applications that require reliable protection but are subjected to extreme temperature and high current. This fuse has an extremely fast response time, meaning that it can quickly react to over-currents and disconnect the circuit, protecting the system from damage.

The MF-RG400-AP works by utilizing a unique Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) element which is placed in series with the circuit being protected. When an overcurrent condition occurs, the PTC rapidly increases in temperature, resulting in the PTC becoming non-conductive and breaking the circuit it is connected to. This serves to protect the system from damage by quickly disconnecting the current source. This restore the circuit, the PTC will cool and become conductive once again, and the circuit will resume normal operation. This resettable function makes the MF-RG400-AP ideal for applications where a one-shot fuse would be inadequate, such as emergency lighting, batteries, automotive and consumer electronics.
