PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC Resettable Fuses, or polymeric positive temperature coefficient resettable fuses, are current limitation devices intended to protect against overcurrents in electronic circuits. These fuses are available in a wide variety of applications, and are used for overcurrent protection in power supplies, communications equipment, computers, automotive electronics, measurement equipment, and home appliances. The MF-RG700-2 is a 3-terminal, radial-leaded, surface-mount, lower profile style of resettable fuse ideal for high-density applications. It has very low cold resistance, fast response time, and low-power dissipation, making it one of the highest rated current limiting devices in the PTC resettable fusion family.

When the MF-RG700-2 is utilized correctly, its overcurrent protection automatically activates during short-circuits or severe overloads. During operation, the fuse ends develops an electrothermal resistance that limits current to a safe level. Upon removal of the overload or short circuit, the device will automatically reset and its current limiting protection will reset to the pre-overload amperage level.

The MF-RG700-2 features state-of-the-art, highly reliable resettable polymeric fuses whose maximum hold current is between 0.15 and 15A with an almost infinite life cycle enable reliable protection in high-density application areas. It is also RoHS-compliant for environmental compliance. This device is available in current ratings from 0.15A to 15A and typical volatge ratings from 0.6V to 6V. It also features minimum resistance values as low as 0.3 mΩ and a fast response time.

The construction of the MF-RG700-2 consists of PTC fusible polymer element and electrodes laminated onto a ceramic substrate. When the current in the circuit reaches or exceeds the fuse’s rated current, the element heats up and the internal resistance rises, thus limiting the current flow. When the overload is removed, the PTC element cools down and its internal resistance drops back to its pre-overload level, allowing current to flow freely again.

The main advantages of this resettable fuse is that it eliminates the need for replacing blown fuses or troubleshooting where a blown fuse might be. This type of fuse is also less liable to be overloaded when used with an appropriate current limiting device.
