PTC Resettable Fuses have lowered the current flow thresholds to as low as 0.05A, and have become increasingly popular for their protective abilities in consumer power supplies and motor, battery, component and control circuits. One of the most commonly available is the MF-RHT070-2. Here, the application field and working principle of MF-RHT070-2 is examined in detail.

The MF-RHT070-2 is an advanced version of a Polymeric Positive Temperature Co-efficient (PPTC) Resettable Fuse. It has been designed for use in low-voltage electrical and electronic circuits. It fills the requirement gap between holding the circuit in a protected low-current state, while maintaining the capability to reset automatically in the event of an overload. Typical applications include the protection of power supplies, DC motors, logic circuits, battery charge and discharge cycles, and high current connectors.

The MF-RHT070-2 polymeric resettable fuse is designed with a self-activatingting positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) element, enclosed in a meltable plastic case and covered by a hard plastic outer-shell. Since the case and shell melt under over-current and over-temperature conditions, they operate as thermal-fuses. The PPTC element acts as a fusible resistor, which increases in resistance with increasing temperature. When the fuse trips, the resulting thermal runaway similarly increases the fuse\'s temperature until it melts the case and shell and opens the circuit.

Under normal operating conditions, the MF-RHT070-2s resistance remains constant and limits current to specified levels. When an over-current is detected, the resistance of the PPTC will rise sharply, diverting more current to the device and opening the circuit. Following removal of the overload, the fuse will cool down and reset automatically, reducing the element\'s resistance to its initial level or below. This allows the fuse to protect against further over-currents, without having to be replaced.

The MF-RHT070-2 is a Type 2 device, meaning its element will not reset until it has been completely cooled down. It has a current-holding capability of 5A, and a current trip point of 0.05A. This range covers a wide spectrum of applications, including logic circuits, DC motors and power supplies. The device has a repeat breakdown voltage of 6V, and is RoHS-compliant.

The MF-RHT070-2 is a versatile polymeric resettable fuse with a broad range of applications. Its heat-activated PPTC element offers a unique combination of protective and resetting capabilities, and has proved suitable for a variety of circuits and electronic devices. By triggering at low thresholds, the fuse ensures that delicate components remain safe and the circuit is not overloaded. The lightweight and compact design of the MF-RHT070-2 makes it especially ideal for battery-powered products, such as laptops and phones.
