PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC Resettable Fuses, sometimes known as "Positive Temperature Coefficient" fuses, are fuses designed to provide circuit protection and reset themselves, much like the traditional thermostat fuses. PTC fuses consist of a thermally sensitive polymer element surrounded by a metal body and two contacts at either end. When the short circuit current passes through the element, it heats up until the resistance reaches a set level. This causes the fuse to stop passing current and trip. After a cooldown period, the resistance resets, and the fuse is once again allowing current.

PTC Resettable Fuses have a wide range of applications, mainly in over-current protection, and are often used in many consumer electronics, including computers, cell phones, and other portable electronic devices.
