Working Principle of MF-RHT550-AP PTC Resettable Fuse

The MF-RHT550-AP PTC resettable fuse is a bimetal fusible element encapsulated in special thermoplastic material. Under normal conditions, the device operates as a low-resistance switch, allowing current to flow from input to the output. When the circuit experiences a fault, the bimetal will conduct the excessive current to the ground, thus protecting the circuit against damage. This process, known as tripping, causes the bimetal to heat up and expand. This expansion will open up the device and will break the current flow.

When the over-current or over-temperature condition is eliminated, the device will cool down and reset, allowing for current to flow again. The resetting process is done manually, by pressing down on the reset button found on the device. Once the button is pressed, power is restored to the circuit and the device is ready to trip again if needed.
