PTC resettable fuses offer an attractive alternative to replacing traditional fuse devices for circuit protection. The Melfuse MF-RX250-AP-99 PTC resettable fuse is specifically designed to provide consistent, high-reliability circuit protection. It is suitable for protection in a wide range of applications including AC or DC current control, motor overload protection, voltage control, and protection of telecommunications equipment.

Principle of Operation

The MF-RX250-AP-99 works by means of a polymer PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) element contained within the housing. This element is composed of a “ceramic like” material, which exhibits a non-linear temperature response. When the fuse is subjected to high levels of current the PTC element generates heat, which in turn increases its resistance. The higher the current, the greater the heat generated and the higher the resistance.

Once the fuse reaches a predetermined trip level (current) the PTC element heats up to the point where its resistance goes up dramatically, thus dramatically reducing the current through the circuit. When this occurs, the current is essentially “self-limiting” and the circuit is automatically protected.

The MF-RX250-AP-99 includes a Numistor. This is a solid state, non-inductive resistor that is activated when the PTC element reaches its trip point. The resistor quickly shuts down the current by reducing the voltage across the fuse. The purpose of the Numistor is to act as a “circuit breaker”, so that when a thermal overload occurs, the fuse resets itself and resumes normal operation.

Application Fields

The MF-RX250-AP-99 offers a wide range of application fields, some of which include AC or DC current control, motor overload protection, voltage control, and protection of telecommunications equipment. It is also suitable for use in a variety of industries, including consumer electronics, industrial, automotive, and medical. Furthermore, it is suitable for protecting sensitive electronics such as cameras, flash memory, and other sensitive electronic components.

The Melfuse MF-RX250-AP-99 is designed to be used in circuits with AC or DC current up to 250 Amps, so it is suitable for use in all types of motor control applications, including high-power applications such as alternators, compressors, and other high-power motors. It is also suitable for use in equipment where reliable over-current protection is required, such as electric furnaces, power supplies, and power rails.

In addition to its current limiting and over-current protection capabilities, the MF-RX250-AP-99 also provides voltage control and surge protection. The PTC element is designed to automatically trip when the voltage reaches a predetermined level, thus protecting sensitive electronic components from voltage surges. The fuse is also designed with a “Fail-Safe” mode that kicks in when the voltage exceeds a pre-set maximum. This fail-safe mode will prevent over-voltage conditions from occurring.

Conclusion

The Melfuse MF-RX250-AP-99 PTC resettable fuse offers a reliable and cost-effective solution for circuit protection in a wide range of applications. Its non-linear, self-limiting response provides reliable over-current and surge protection, as well as voltage control. The “Fail-Safe” feature offers added peace of mind when used in critical applications. The compact size and wide range of current ratings make the MF-RX250-AP-99 PTC resettable fuse suitable for a variety of industrial, automotive, and medical applications.
