PTC Resettable Fuses, such as MF-SMDF050-2, are designed to protect over-current components and circuits from overload and short-circuit conditions. Unlike traditional fuses, these fuses are self-healing and automatically reset after a surge or overload event. This makes them ideal for applications that cannot tolerate traditional fuse changes, such as consumer electronics, automotive components, and industrial equipment.
The MF-SMDF050-2 PTC Resettable Fuse is a small, 1.25" x 1.25" rated device that is ideal for use in low, medium, and high current applications. It is a surface mounted device with UL, TUV, CSA, and CE certification. This particular PTC Resettable Fuse has a voltage rating of 32 VDC with a 6A current rating and a trip point of 8 Amps. It also features a fast-acting response time of 9 to 10 μsec and an operating temperature range of -40 °C to + 85 °C.
The design of the MF-SMDF050-2 PTC Resettable Fuse is based on the solid-state distributed protection principle. This principle is based on the dynamic response characteristics of PTC thermistors and their ability to self-energize when an over-current situation occurs. In this case, the MF-SMDF050-2 has an external series resistor to increase the device\'s trip point current, and an internal resistor to prevent exponentially increasing current after multiple faulty currents occur.
When an over-current situation occurs, the current draw is diverted away from the protected component and then through the MF-SMDF050-2. On its way out, the current heats up the PTC resistor which in turn causes the resistor to reduce its resistance. This decrease in resistance increases the current flow which, in turn, increases the device\'s temperature. As the PTC resistor\'s temperature rises, its resistance increases until the over-current is isolated from the protected component. At this point, the fuse is reset and the device turns off.
When the over-current condition is removed, the PTC Resistor cools and its resistance decreases, allowing current to flow through the component again. This process of self-healing allows a component or circuit to be protected without having to switch out traditional fuses. The MF-SMDF050-2 also features a low voltage protection mechanism which triggers if the voltage drops below the cut-off threshold.
The MF-SMDF050-2 PTC Resettable Fuse is an ideal choice for a variety of applications because of its small size and simple operation. It is a highly reliable and cost-effective solution to over-current protection that can easily replace traditional fuses. This device is an excellent choice for consumer electronics, automotive, and industrial applications, and its self-healing nature makes it a reliable and safe choice for protection against over-current faults.
