PTC Resettable Fuses
PTC resettable fuses, also known as polyfuse, are safety devices designed to help protect electronic circuits from overcurrent conditions. Unlike traditional fuses, which must be replaced when they “blow”, PTC resettable fuses can be reset and continue working.
MF-USMF175-2 Application Field and Working Principle
The MF-USMF175-2 PTC resettable fuse, introduced in 2014 by Omron Automation, is specifically designed to help protect automotive computing electronics from overcurrent situations, such as short-circuits and other damaging conditions that may not have been foreseen during design. The MF-USMF175-2 PTC also serves as an excellent method of identifying and resetting faults.
The MF-USMF175-2 works by detecting an abnormal amount of current flow in a circuit and then limiting that current. It is a bidirectional PTC, which means it can detect and protect from currents flowing in both directions. While limiting current, the MF-USMF175-2 will generate heat that will “reset” the PTC once the overcurrent condition has resolved. It is designed to repeatedly reset and remain highly reliable over time.
The MF-USMF175-2 features excellent heat resistance and offers operational ratings that match the high voltage and current spikes found in vehicle control systems. It can handle up to 70V/17.5A of maximum continuous rated voltage and current and is rated up to 100V/25A once overload current has been removed. The MF-USMF175-2 is designed to protect against failure due to insulation, dust and dirt accumulation and vibration.
Omron Automation’s MF-USMF175-2 PTC resettable fuse is an ideal choice for automotive electronics design as it is designed to provide protection along with identification and reset capabilities in applications that produce heat and high current spikes.
