Through Hole Resistors
In electronics, through hole resistors refer to resistors that are constructed with an anode, which is an outer contact portion, and a cathode, which is inserted into a hole on the substrate. These resistors are usually available in a variety of different sizes and types, to suit every application. The most basic form of through hole resistor is a carbon-film resistor, which consists of a resistive element, usually carbon-based, that is sandwiched between two metallic contacts. The resistive element and the anode and cathode connections are usually identical materials, usually copper or aluminum.
The power rating of the through hole resistors is also somewhat limited, as the small size of the component limits the amount of power it can dissipate. This makes through hole resistors most often used for low-power applications, such as signal conditioning, instrumentation, and timer circuits. This type of resistor is also often used in high voltage applications, such as mains power filtering and electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression.
MF0207FTE52-845K is one such through hole resistors. It is a carbon-film resistor with a typical 4.5 kOhm resistance and tolerance of 5%. This resistor is a general-purpose device and is commonly used in a variety of applications from low-level analog signals up to medium-level digital circuits. It features a power handling capability of up to 0.8 watts and can achieve an operating temperature of up to 125°C (257°F), allowing for its use in many types of consumer and industrial equipment.
In terms of working principle, through hole resistors usually operate on Ohm’s Law, which states that the current (I) through two points in a circuit is equal to the voltage (V) divided by the resistance (R). So, when a voltage is applied to the two points of the resistor, the current drawn through it is proportional to the resistance of the resistor and inversely proportional to the applied voltage; the ratio of resistance to voltage is the resistance of the resistor.
Due to the small size of the component, through hole resistors are limited in the amount of power they can handle. Thus, they must be carefully rated for the application and must be operated within their power rating. If the resistors are overloaded, they can suffer permanent damage and even catastrophic failure. A resistor’s power rating is directly linked to its temperature coefficient, or the measure of how much it will increase its resistance as the temperature increases. Through hole resistors usually have a rated power of 0.3 watts, but some higher power devices can handle up to 5 watts.
While through hole resistors are typically used for low-power applications, they are also increasingly used for other applications, such as electric motors or high power switching applications. For these applications, the resistor must be capable of dissipating the heat generated from the currents flowing through it without becoming damaged. High-power through hole resistors are designed to be able to handle these larger currents and dissipate the heat generated in order to prevent damage. These resistors are sometimes referred to as "power resistors" or "heat sinks" due to their ability to dissipate heat.
Finally, when designing a circuit with through hole resistors, it is important to consider placement on the circuit board. Heat dissipation is an important consideration; as it is difficult to dissipate heat if the resistor is close to other components. Likewise, the circuit board must be designed to ensure that the resistors are properly ventilated so as to prevent them from overheating.
