Inrush Current Limiters (ICLs) are electronic components that are widely used to limit current due to the result of inrush surges, such as power-on surges. The MF72-012D9 is a standardized inrush current limiter primarily used in power distribution systems for -40℃ to 80℃ operating temperatures. This PTC thermistor-based ICL can handle current from 0.5A to 3A in latching phases up to 3s, temperatures up to 85℃, and in drastic environments.

The MF72-012D9’s application field covers various electrical components and systems from electric motors and controllers, to dimmer systems, pumps, and HVACs. Each of these requires immediate protection from inrush currents, as they otherwise could be damaged from power-on surges. As a non-linear component, the MF72-012D9 allows the user to set the current-limiting behaviors during system inrush phases.

It operates according to the PTC thermistor effect, and works by resiting an increased current, causing it to act as a resistor of increased resistance within the circuit’s range. This resistive action restricts current flow, protecting parts, systems, and wires from overloads or surges. The thermal limitation function is also designed to protect from possible overheating of the device, since it will reset itself upon reaching a temperature exceeding an operating limit.

The MF72-012D9’s working principle involves a transistor protection circuit, allowing the ICL to protect components by creating an opening between load and circuit. When an inrush current peaks during the system’s switching on phase, the short pulse of the transistor will reset the PTC thermistor element, effectively limiting the current in the load circuit. This working principle helps ensure efficient current limiting by shortening the opening and closing time.

The MF72-012D9 inrush current limiter also exhibits some noteworthy features. It is a hermetic PTC thermistor-branched device, meaning its element covers can be sealed in a high-pin-count adaptive case, making it resistant to contaminated air and superior protection from water or fog. Its DC operating feature also makes it suitable for DC power switching operations. Additionally, its astringent lead frames ensure good wearing resistance and its mechanical strength makes it a reliable device for high-temperature conditions.

The inherently stable and fail-safe design of the MF72-012D9 ensures long-term protection to electrical components, making it an ideal device for inrush current limiting. It constantly monitors current and temperature levels, utilizing self-reset when temperature or current values exceed the predetermined threshold. This feature ensures that the device can repeatedly and effectively limit current in stubborn overvoltage and over-current scenarios.
