DC DC Converters
DC-DC converters, more commonly known as DC converters, are devices that range from small switching regulators to large power supplies. The term “DC converter” generally encompasses the entire category of power conversion devices that exist between a discrete DC power source and the specific DC consuming load.
The MI-220-MX-S is an advanced DC-DC converter that is specifically engineered for use in high power applications, such as transportation, communication networks, industrial automation systems, motion control systems, military systems, data centers and various medical applications. The working principle of the MI-220-MX-S DC-DC converter is based on the same core value as other DC-DC converters. This involves the conversion of a direct current (DC) supply voltage at one level to another voltage at a different level. The necessary power conversion is accomplished by connecting the required components in a series circuit that form the DC-DC converter.
At the input side, the module has two rectifiers connected in reverse series. These rectifiers are responsible for rectifying the AC current from the supply by clamped it to DC voltage across capacitor, C1, which is connected between the two rectifiers output. This voltage is then filtered to reach a specific level of steady state voltage. The input filter also dampens the voltage spike caused by using a switch mode converter.
At the output side, the output voltage is regulated using the switch mode controller. This regulator is driven by a high frequency switch placed in the middle of the feedback network, providing current to the inductor, L1. The controller will be activated when the output voltage is lower than the desired (set) voltage. The power switching device then activated, compressing the magnetic field of the inductor, and thus providing DC current to deliver a regulated output.
