The MIC23451-AAAYFL-EV evaluation boards fall into the category of off-line Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPSs). They operate using a combination of direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) to form the output current and voltage. The evaluation boards are designed to provide the design engineer with an effective platform for testing multiple power supply designs in terms of efficiency, load, line transient response and general performance before finalizing the schematic.

The MIC23451-AAAYFL-EV evaluation boards feature a wide range of input voltage capabilities, from 90 to 264 Vac, allowing for compatibility with global AC line voltages. The maximum output voltage the board can provide at a given input voltage is contingent upon the actual input AC waveform. An onboard switch mode power factor correction (PFC) circuit allows for improved efficiency with load currents up to 8A.

The operating principle of the MIC23451-AAAYFL-EV evaluation boards can best be understood through their 3-stage design. The 3-stages can be categorized as a PFC section, isolated DC/DC converter section and an output rectifying filter section.

The PFC section is made up of an input capacitance and a PFC IC. The IC takes AC energy from the input line and converts it to DC. This is then fed to the DC/DC switching section, where it is used to drive the switching of the power devices in proper sequence, which then isolates and step-downs the voltage to the desired output voltage.

The output of the DC/DC switching section is then fed to the rectifying filter stage. The incoming AC voltage is rectified and filtered through inductors, capacitors and resistors, forming a ripple-free DC voltage at the output. This supply is then used to power the load.

The MIC23451-AAAYFL-EV evaluation boards feature a number of features and safety protections, which are essential for a safe and reliable power supply in a number of different applications. These include load current sensing output, current limiting, input voltage over-voltage protection, output over-voltage protection and output short-circuit protection.
