The MIC28304-2-12V-EV is a member of Microchip’s family of Evaluation Boards for DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS. It is an easy to use board that serves as a platform for evaluating the MIC28533 high voltage integrated circuit (IC). The evaluation board is a complete, ready to use off-line power solution to power 12 V loads.
The MIC28304-2-12V-EV evaluation board integrates a Smart Gate Driver (SGD) as a secondary side synchronous rectifier, making it ideal for isolated Flyback power designs. Additionally, it uses a MIC28533 IC as the main controller. It provides an integrated level-shift from its internal VDD to an externally sensed 24 V bias voltage, removing the need for many stand-alone level shifters. The MIC28533 also contains an adjustable external loop compensation architecture. This feature contributes to a quick, easy-to-tune system for most makes a models of switchmode power supplies.
The MIC28304-2-12V-EV offers improved performance characteristics, improved light load efficiency, improved ripple performance, and improved power factor performance compared to traditional solutions. Also, it features a maximum open loop gain of ~ 3.5 V/V and proprietary smart current sharing between input pins for improved output current accuracy. The device provides a true, high frequency, phase-shifted zero current switching (ZCS) solution for both high and mid-power applications.
This evaluation board contains a complete switching power supply system with a fixed 12V and variable 24V output. Additionally, the board features adjustable compensation so users can easily tune the controller for optimal performance. The on-board resistor and feedback networks also provide for easy adjustment of the output voltage. There are various on-board test points that allow for monitoring of all the power stages.

Theworking principle of the MIC28304-2-12V-EV evaluation board is simple. The input is rectified and filtered and is connected to the primary side of the transformer. The secondary side of the transformer is connected to the output rectifier and filter. The output voltage is monitored and fed back to the IC via a voltage divider for control. The IC makes sure that the output voltage remains constant, even in the presence of varying loads.
In order to adjust the output voltage, the user simply has to adjust the feedback resistor divider network. The IC will sense the changing voltage and adjust its output accordingly.
