The MIC3203-1YM is an integrated power management circuit (PMIC) designed to provide LED-driver capability for LED lighting applications. This integrated PMIC is based on a current-mode controlled buck controller implemented in a 4-pin SOT23-6 package and contains accurate current regulation and adjustable SHORT circuit protection. It operates from an input voltage of 4.5V to 42V and provides a regulated output current up to 0.3A, enabling a wide range of applications such as LED backlight, stage lighting and signage illumination.
MIC3203-1YM offers a wide range of features and benefits that make it ideal for LED driver applications. It features a maximum output current of 0.3A and an adjustable power limit via an external resistor. Using an external resistor, it can be adjusted to light any number of LEDs in series and maintain a constant current output. It also has an adjustable overvoltage protection (OVP) and a low output voltage ripple. Additionally, it contains a fast-response shutdown input, enabling a timely shutdown of the circuit. Furthermore, the MIC3203-1YM circuit provides accurate current regulation and constant current output current, even in the presence of large LED voltage differences, as well as adjustable over-temperature protection (OTP) and open-LED protection.
The working principle of the MIC3203-1YM circuit is based on a basic buck converter with linear current regulation. An external resistor is used to set the output, and the voltage across the resistor is compared to an internal reference voltage. If the output current increases, so does the voltage dropped across the resistor and this signal is used to regulate the switch current based on the linearly scaled output value. The basic operating principle is similar to a linear regulator with the addition of a switch instead of a linear pass element in order to increase the efficiency of the converter. When the switch is on, the MOSFET will pass the current to the output rails and when it is off, a diode will forward bias and allow the current to pass to the output.
The MIC3203-1YM circuit utilizes the sense comparator to constantly monitor the current system and detect any overshoot, which is a key feature in protecting the LEDs from being damaged in the case of a large difference in voltage between the LEDs. The system also has an adjustable OVP and OTP to protect the LEDs from damage due to excessive current.
