This application note describes the features, applications, and working principle of the MIC3223YTSE LED driver.The MIC3223YTSE is an low-power, low-footprint, high-efficiency LED driver from Microchip Technology. It is capable of driving up to 7 LEDs with a nominal forward voltage of 8–30 V DC and a maximum forward current of 25 A. The MIC3223YTSE uses a low-capacitance, low-voltage power MOSFET switch to regulate the current to the LEDs. Its AEC-Q100 certification makes it a suitable choice for automotive applications, including electronics and monitor designs.At the heart of the MIC3223YTSE is a high-frequency current-mode switching regulator, which is capable of delivering up to 200mA of output current. The chip also features linear dimming control, active transconductance modulation, and open-circuit protection. Its high-speed pulse-width modulation (PWM) control allows for smooth dimming and controlled current switching that can be tailored to any application. Additionally, the active transconductance modulation allows for higher efficiency and low frequency noise. When used with an external PWM signal, the chip is capable of driving 7 LEDs with a duty cycle of up to 100%.The working principle of the MIC3223YTSE LED driver involves several steps. Initially, the current is controlled by an internal current-sensing MOSFET switch. The closed-loop feedback (CLF) circuitry is designed to regulate the current, keeping it within a specified range.
