Mica and PTFE capacitors are becoming increasingly popular due to their relative high stability and wide range of operating conditions. Working Principle

Mica capacitors usually consists of two layers of mica particularly Muscovite, which is coated with electrodes and then dipped into a solution of a suitable dielectric material. This dielectric material could be a variety of substances depending on the voltage rating of the capacitor. When the two plates of the capacitor are placed in close proximity, the capacitor behaves like a dielectric material with relatively high insulation resistance. As a result, AC current is prevented from passing through the capacitor due to its high dielectric strength. Furthermore, most mica capacitors are self-healing; meaning that when a spark in the capacitor takes place, the dielectric material manages to reform its structure, thereby returning the capacitor to its full operational capability.

Mica and PTFE capacitors offer many advantages. In addition to their relative high stability and wide range of operating conditions, PTFE capacitors provide a marked improvement in dielectric qualities. This results in significantly lower leakage rates, higher dielectric strength, and reduced Capacitance compared to other conventional dielectric material like paper or oil. Moreover, PTFE capacitors are lighter and more compact than their mica counterparts and offer extended service life. As a result, mica and PTFE capacitors are becoming increasingly popular for use in a variety of AC applications.
