Film Capacitors:Application Field and Working Principle
Film capacitors, also known as plastic capacitors or dielectric capacitors, are composed of two metallic conductors, called electrodes, separated by a thin insulating plastic film. Compared to ceramic capacitors, they possess a wide range of advantages, such as high capacitance retention, superior electrical conductivity, high insulation resistance and excellent temperature stability. Due to these benefits, film capacitors are commonly used in a variety of applications from power grids to avionics, across the industrial, digital and automotive markets.Film capacitors can be further divided into three categories: Wet film capacitors, Polymer film capacitors and Metalized polyester film capacitors. While these capacitors differ in their construction, making materials and properties, they all work on the same principle – storing electricity by accumulating electrical charge via dielectric material. Each of these capacitors consists of two continually conductive, yet separated, layers that are separated by a polymer film or a layer of material, known as dielectric. This dielectric acts as a medium of storing electrical energy and producing a capacitor.Wet film capacitors use a highly polar dielectric fluid between two conductors. As the current flows through the capacitor, the electrostatic field in the dielectric causes the liquid to polarize. This results in an increased capacitance per unit volume.Polymer film capacitors are composed of thin plastic films layered to form a finely structured membrane. The dielectric layer has a few nanometers of insulating material built up through a chemical process. This insulating material allows charge to accumulate from the two conductors, producing a high capacitance value.Metalized polyester film capacitors use two metallic conductors along with a polyester film. To create the dielectric, a thin mylar film is coated with an oxide layer, which is then metallized with a thin evaporated metal sheet. This thin cream layer acts as a dielectric layer and enables charge to accumulate on the capacitors and store the charge therein. In addition to the dielectric and its capacitor’s ability to store the charge, the life and effectiveness of a capacitor also depend on its rated voltage. This is because a capacitor has a limited ability to handle high-voltage peaks without damage, so it is important to select the right rated voltage capability based on the application. Moreover, when selecting capacitors, its dielectric dissipation factor (DDF) should also be considered. DDF indicates how well the material of a capacitor dissipates the energy accumulated, as well as how efficiently the capacitor holds the current. The lower the DDF, the better the capacitor’s performance. When selecting the right capacitor, users must consider the rated voltage, DDF and other materials to ensure a reliable, high-performance product. In conclusion, film capacitors offer a wide variety of benefits, such as greater capacitance retention, superlative electrical conductivity, and excellent temperature stability. Since they are used in different industry applications, people not only must choose the right rated voltage and DDF, but they should also take into consideration the other materials like the construction, making materials and properties. Film capacitors are reliable and highly effective components for electric circuit systems, providing users with many advantages. The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
