Film Capacitors

Film capacitors (MKP383191063JDA2B0) are widely used in a wide range of applications due to their low ESR, low self-heating and excellent temperature stability. Applications

Film capacitors can be applied for motor-start circuits, relay control circuits, capacitive coupled filters, DC link circuit, frequency converters, motor capacitor spark quench circuits and much more. These capacitors have a wide range of voltage ratings available, making them suitable for many applications.

It is mainly used for filtering, decoupling and snubber applications and in the grid inverter system because of its low Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) and leakage current. The high ripple capability of the capacitor makes it suitable for use in power supplies and thus it is commonly used as a bypass capacitor.

Principle

Film capacitors work on the same basic principles as any other type of capacitor. Current is produced between two conductors of opposite electrical charge when a voltage is applied. The charge causes a dielectric field to be created in between the two conductors. The dielectric field functions as an insulator and prevents electrons from passing between the two conductors.

In the case of film capacitors, the dielectric material is a film of polypropylene, polyester, polystyrene, teflon or other plastic material. This film has a dielectric constant that is greater than other materials like air and oil. This increased dielectric constant allows for a more efficient capacitance.

Film capacitors also have a very low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance). This allows them to have a very low “internal” resistance and, therefore, a higher current capacity. This makes them particularly useful in applications that require a high current capacity and low ESR.

Film capacitors also have a very high insulation resistance. This makes them useful in applications that involve high voltage or high voltage transients.

Overall, film capacitors are ideal for use in applications that require a low ESR, high current capacity and low reactance. They also have excellent temperature and humidity stability, which makes them ideal for use in outdoor applications.
