The MOD-NRF8001 from MikroElektronika is an expansion board designed for the EasyMx PRO V7 for STM32 development boards. It contains an integrated system-on-a-chip (SoC) from Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), the NRF8001, which includes a Bluetooth v4.0 Low Energy (LE) controller and an integrated communications processor. The NRF8001 is an industry leader in Bluetooth LE communication and power management. The MOD-NRF8001 can provide end users with the flexibility to develop and design their own wireless applications. It can be used to add Bluetooth LE communication and power management to embedded applications. It can also be used to send the data collected from an embedded sensor, to a Bluetooth Smart Ready device, such as tablets or smartphones. The MOD-NRF8001 further expands the capabilities of the EasyMx PRO V7 development board.The MOD-NRF8001 is a versatile device that has many different applications. It can be used for wireless sensor networks, home automation, health and fitness monitoring, beacons, and low energy lighting. The power-efficient SoC reduces power consumption and increases battery life, thus allowing wireless applications to remain powered up for days or even weeks. The application possibilities of this board are endless.The MOD-NRF8001 consists of different integrated components that work together to deliver an efficient and reliable communications solution. The components of the board are the NRF8001 SoC, a crystal oscillator for accurate timing, an on-chip GFSK radio transceiver, integrated power management, and two antenna pins for Bluetooth LE communication. The radio transceiver gives the board a transmission range of up to 30 meters indoors and as much as 130 meters outdoors, depending on the environment. The power management component ensures the board is able to run continuously at a low power state and that the connected device is able to stay on for a prolonged period of time without causing exhaustion in the battery. The integrated power management also provides software features such as power downs of the board and on-chip power management features such as low power wakeups and reduced power consumption in sleep mode.In order to interface with the NRF8001 SoC, the board includes a digital I/O connection, an NFC antenna pad for proximity communication, an SD card slot, and a USB port. The digital I/O connection allows it to be connected with an embedded system, such as a microprocessor or microcontroller. The NFC antenna pad allows for two-way communication with another NFC-enabled device.
