Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) devices are widely used in a variety of electrical and electronic equipment. They provide protection for circuits against overvoltage transients, inrush currents, spikes and other form of electrical surge. TVS devices come in many types and form factors, and are divided into two main families: Varistors and Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs).

The MOV-14D621K is a 14mm Disc Varistor, a variant of the Metal Oxide Varistor family. The MOV family of disk-like devices have become popular due to their small size and high performance. They are used in a variety of power-supply and signal-transmission applications, such as in circuit protection, surge voltage control, radio frequency noise suppression and lightning protection, among others.

The MOV-14D621K is designed with two terminals and a metalized zinc oxide element in between. It works by providing a series path for the transient current. When a voltage spike higher than the maximum working voltage of the device is applied across its terminals, the device gets into an avalanche breakdown state. This sudden redistribution of charges within the MOV creates a very low and stable resistance, diverting the transient current away from the protected circuit.

In its normal operating state, the MOV-14D621K has a higher resistance value and no current is drawn from the circuit. When an over-voltage spike is detected, the device quickly and automatically lowers its resistance so that a very large transient current flows through it, which protects the sensitive circuitry from sustaining any damage. With this working principle, the device is able to tolerate sustained transients up to a maximum peak pulse current of 160A, and an ultimate surge energy of 1020J.

The MOV-14D621K has a considerable power dissipation rating of 315W, making it suitable for use in high power applications.
