MOV-20D470K is a type of Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) which is a common component used in circuits of Electronic devices for protection against surge and over-voltage. This document explains the usage of MOV-20D470K and the working principle behind it.
MOV-20D470K is a passive and two-terminal non-linear resistor with a very high resistance value in the normal operating conditions. MOVs, which is short for Metal Oxide Varistors, are normally used in AC circuits where the source may cause abrupt surges or spikes in amplitude. The MOV-20D470K is designed for 120V AC application and makes use of its "Varistor" characteristic for proper absorption of overvoltage and ensures reliable protection of downstream circuitry.
MOV-20D470K is a general-purpose Varistor which offers noise suppression and surge absorption with the control circuit of electronic devices. It is mostly used to protect transistors, relays, drivers, switches, solenoids, and other Control Circuits from overvoltage, surge, and other related power fluctuations.
MOV-20D470K is also used in the Power Supply Line of many switch mode power supplies and zero-crossing systems for Electronic Control units. It is mainly used in conjunction with a Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor (TVS) diode and other filtering components such as capacitors. MOV-20D470K absorbs the voltage spikes and prevents them from reaching the downstream circuitry or the load, resulting in stable and safe operation.
The working principle behind MOV-20D470K is relatively simple. When an overvoltage or surge happens in the circuit, it causes the voltage across the Varistor to exceed the limit of its breakdown voltage.
