The MP2131GG-P is a high-performance, low-noise and low-power DC-to-DC switching regulator offered by Monolithic Power Systems (MPS). It is specially designed for battery-powered systems requiring low output voltage ＆high efficiency voltage regulation. The MP2131GG-P is suitable for applications where input voltage is from 2.5V to 6V and output voltage is from 0.8V to 4.0V. It supports output currents up to 1.8A and includes both Cycle-by-cycle current limiting and output over-voltage protection.

The MP2131GG-P uses a Single-Loop Current-Mode controller to regulate the output voltage. It provides fast transient response, accurate output voltage and minimal external components. The switching frequency is adjustable via an external resistor and can be set up to 2MHz. It also provides shutdown control which saves power consumption during system standby mode. Moreover, the device is capable of operating at extreme temperatures, providing temperature ranges from -40°C to +85°C.

Working Principle

The MP2131GG-P employs a single-loop current-mode control structure. It uses a feedback loop which compares an internal reference voltage with the output voltage to determine the duty cycle of the switch. The current sense resistor senses the inductor current and determines when to turn off the switch. It also has a high-side current shunt to provide over-current protection. The device uses an external resistor to adjust the switching frequency.

The MP2131GG-P has internal over-voltage protection circuitry. When the output voltage exceeds the limit, the controller enters a protection mode in which the duty cycle of the switch is reduced, preventing any further rise in the output voltage. Similarly, it has an internal cycle-by-cycle current limiting which limits the peak inductor current. This helps to prevent any damage to the device due to over-current conditions.

In addition, the device has a shutdown control feature which can be used to save power in standby mode. When the shutdown mode is activated, the device enters a low-power mode in which the output voltage is greatly reduced. This feature helps to maximize the battery life in portable applications.
