PMIC (Power Management ICs) are integrated circuits that handle power management functions, enabling the system to control, supply, and utilizing power in the most efficient way, making sure that only the exact required power necessary is used within a circuit under specific conditions and environmental parameters. The MPQ4470AGL-Z is a DC/DC Switching Regulator by Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) which uses the patented VIPerPlus Control technique that results in the need of fewer external components, an increased efficiency, and low standby power consumption, making it a great option for applications such as LED lighting, Mobile/Smart phones, Point-of-Load (PoL) with Isolated DC/DC converters and motor control applications.

This integrated circuit offers a high voltage input of up to 42V, 2A source/sink peak current and programmable switching frequency from 500 kHz to 2 MHz. The wide input voltage range is ideal for Li-Ion Battery applications, reducing the need for LC filters and allowing up to 95% efficiency which contributes to higher power supply for consumers. Additionally, the internal soft-start function avoids overshoot at high peak current and allows for a smooth current operation.

The MPQ4470AGLi-Z features an advanced variable frequency control algorithm which is designed to reduce output ripple, some of the other features are:

The MPQ4470AGLi-Z is a DC/DC Buck Regulator used to convert higher voltage input/down to a lower voltage output, as well as a DC/DC Boost converter used to step-up the output voltage. As a buck regulator, an external Transistor + Diode are operated in a switch mode controlling the voltage conversion from input to output. As a boost regulator the transistor and the diode are replaced by two transistors.

The power stage of the MPQ4470AGL-Z consists of two external power switches connected to the integrated PWM controller, which in turn has two power supply pins: one for the Controller (Vctrl), and one for the Gate Drive circuits (Vdrive). The zero crossing detector detects the status of the inductor current, providing the information if the current is increasing or decreasing, and acts as the Feed-Forward path.The PWM block receives signals from the zero crossing detector, the control loop, and the oscillator; deciding which switches needs to be turned on and off to achieve the desired output voltage.

The compensation network is made of just three components: an integrator, a compensator which is external to the IC, and a resistor. The compensation components allow the response time of the regulator, oscillator frequency accuracy, and phase margin to be adjusted, and influence the voltage regulation circuit\'s stability. The frequency of the oscillator can be precisely adjusted by controlling its duty cycle, allowing a synchronous frequency range into the 100KHz-2MHZ range.
