Introduction to MPU-6000 Motion Sensors - IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units)
A Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) is an ever-expanding field of technology that uses tiny mechanical structures and/or electronic circuits to respond to external stimuli. IMUs are electronic sensors that measure and report acceleration, force, speed, and/or position. The MPU-6000 is an IMU specifically designed by InvenSense Inc., to measure motion in six-degrees-of-freedom, and is manufactured using cutting-edge MEMS (micro electro-mechanical system) technology.
Applications
The MPU-6000 is used on a wide variety of platforms, from handheld consumer electronics to industrial, robotics and autonomous vehicle systems. The MEMS sensors built into the MPU-6000 make it well-suited for motion-control applications where acceleration and position must remain stable. In the medical field, the MPU-6000 is used in imaging and equipment-stabilization, surgical robotics, and prosthetic-limb development. It is also used in consumer electronics such as gaming systems, virtual reality systems, and wearable fitness trackers. In industry, it is used to monitor and track equipment movement and provide feedback on operations.
For aerial and ground-based platforms, the MPU-6000’s combination of low power and fast response rate makes it an ideal choice. The IMU can be used to detect and report on changes in motion, provide data to navigation systems, measure precise angular movements, and record other critical data.
Working Principle
MPU-6000 motion sensors use MEMS-based technology to measure the 3-axis of accelerometer data, angular rate of rotation, and magnetic field information. It uses three integrated gyroscopes, three accelerometers, and a single temperature sensor, all of which are connected to a single 32-bit digital signal processor (DSP) to perform calculations and output data.
The accelerometer is used to measure linear acceleration and the gyroscope detects angular rate and motion. Both measure their respective observable in three dimensions, and then combine the data together to report results. The MPU-6000 can measure a rotation of up to ±2000 degrees per second and has a resolution of 16 bits. The fastest sampling rates of the accelerometer and gyroscope are 1000 Hz and 500 Hz respectively.
The MPU-6000 also includes a magnetometer, which is used to measure the Earth’s magnetic field in three directions. The magnetometer is useful for detecting distortions in the Earth’s magnetic field, such as those caused by nearby power lines or metallic objects, which can cause erroneous data readings. This data is then used in combination with the accelerometer and gyroscope data to more accurately calculate the motion of the device in all six-degrees-of-freedom.
Conclusion
The InvenSense Inc. developed MPU-6000 is a widely used MEMS-based motion-sensor IMU that is suitable for a variety of applications. It utilizes a combination of three integrated gyroscopes, three accelerometers, and a single temperature sensor, connected to a single 32-bit digital signal processor (DSP). The MPU-6000 is capable of detecting and recording motion in six-degrees-of-freedom, and the included magnetometer allows it detect distortion from nearby power lines or metallic objects. The advanced MEMS technology used by the MPU-6000 makes it an ideal sensor for a variety of applications, from handheld consumer electronics to industrial and autonomous vehicle systems.
