MS2473A

The MS2473A is a GaAs lateral NPN RF transistor. It is capable of delivering output powers of up to 2 Watts with a 2.5 dB gain, and has a frequency range up to 3GHz. The transistor offers an improved performance over earlier Si transistors and is used in many applications including communications, automotive, and industrial applications. For example, it is frequently used as a gain stage in VHF and UHF systems, as well as in devices such as amplifiers and oscillators.

Application Field

The vast majority of devices using the MS2473A fall into the categories of military, broadband, and CATV (cable television) applications. Working Principle

The MS2473A transistor operates in a manner similar to a Field Effect Transistor (FET). The transistor is comprised of four layers: Source, Drain, Gate, and Base. The Source is connected to a Voltage Source, the Drain is connected to a Voltage Sink, and the Gate and Base are separated by an insulating barrier. When a voltage is applied to the Gate, it creates an electric field which attracts electrons from the Source to the Drain, allowing current to flow between the two. This movement of electrons is the principle which allows the transistor to amplify a signal.

The MS2473A is capable of high gain and power due to its construction and the type of materials used. The Gate is made of an indium phosphide-based material, while the Source and Drain are made of an innovative germanium-based alloy. The insulator between the Base and Gate is made of an extremely thin, yet highly resistant material called nitride.
