Optical Sensors – Photodiodes are widely used in various applications, such as environmental monitoring, machine vision, communications, imaging and detection. The device is made with two layers of CdS/CdTe, thereby capable of detecting both near and far-infrared radiation.

The working principle of the ODA-6W-100M photodiode is based on the photovoltaic effect, wherein a current results from the absorption of incident light by the material. The photo-diode is the simplest possible type of light sensing element, and is created by connecting a sequence of p-n junctions together, adhering to the back of the substrate. The received light is passed through the lenses, wherein each diode in the chain absorbs a portion of the light until it reaches the bottom. The resulting electric current is measured, to calculate the intensity of the light received.
These photodiodes have a high degree of efficiency, emitting only a small amount of energy (heat) when triggered and requiring no external power. They are highly sensitive and can detect a slight change in light levels. This makes them particularly useful when detecting movement. Additionally, they have excellent response time, low noise performance and good ambient illumination immunity.
