The sensor features a response time of 250µs, current sinking output of up to 100mA, and various supply voltage options from 4.5V to 24V. The sensor is also RoHS compliant, and is well suited for a variety of harsh automotive and industrial environments

The device has two main components, a transmitting unit and a receiving unit. The transmitting unit consists of an infrared LED which emits light when a current is applied. The receiving unit consists of an NPN silicon photodarlington which is an integrated circuit composed of several amplifier circuits. The light emitted by the infrared LED is directed by a molded plastic enclosure to the sensing area where the receiver is located. When the light is interrupted, the transistor output turns off and the outputs changes from high to low.

The OPB837L51 is designed to be used with a DC power supply. When the output pin is high, current is sent to the LED which is then emitted into the receiving area. When something moves through the detection area, the light is blocked, causing the transistor output to switch from high to low. This output can then be used to detect the presence or absence of an object.
