TVS - Thyristors

A thyristor is a three-terminal, four-layer semiconductor device consisting of two anode terminals and a gate terminal. Its operation is far more complex than that of the two-terminal varistor. Thyristors are used in a variety of applications, from AC and DC line protection and regulation to reverse battery protection, regenerative over tension protection, and other various actuation, delay, and control applications. The P2600EBLRP2 thyristor device is widely used in the power electronics industry.

P2600EBLRP2 Application Field

The P2600EBLRP2 is especially suitable for AC & DC-line, reverse battery, and over-tension protection. This device offers peak reverse working voltage (PWV) at 400V and repetitive peak off-state voltage at 625V. P2600EBLRP2 Working Principle

When the voltage at the anode terminal of the P2600EBLRP2 thyristor device is higher than the voltage at the gate terminal, the thyristor is turned on. The gate current at this point is small and the voltage drop between the anode and the gate is relatively large. This gate current is further decreased as the gate voltage is increased, resulting in an increased current flow between the anode and cathode terminals of the thyristor. The current at the anode terminal must now be greater than the gate current for the thyristor to remain on. When the voltage at the anode terminal falls below the voltage at the gate terminal, the thyristor will turn off. At this point, the gate current will increase and the voltage between the anode and the gate will become very small, meaning that the current flow between the anode and cathode terminals of the thyristor will be much smaller than before. The current at the anode terminal must now become smaller than the gate current for the thyristor to remain off.
