Switch-mode AC/DC converters are a type of power supply that uses high-frequency switching to convert AC to DC. The switching is done using a power switching device, such as a transistor or thyristor. The alternating current from the power transformer is first sent through the switch-mode power supply’s control circuitry, which then turns the transistor or thyristor on and off at a high frequency. This rapid on-off switching creates a pulsed DC current, which is then rectified and filtered as described above.

They are relatively simple to construct, but their precise operation is essential for safe and efficient operation of the equipment they are powering.
