Optical Sensors - Photodiodes are the most commonly used devices for detection and sensing. They are often used in the fields of telecommunications, automotive, biometrics, astronomy, biomedical, and optical imaging. As an example of an application in the field of automotive, the PDB-C603-3 Photodiodes are used for the purpose of detecting the presence of light inside a vehicle.
This photodetector was developed by Hamamatsu, a Japanese manufacturer. It consists of a N-type semiconductor die, as well as a P-type semiconductor window on top of it. This window is designed so it can detect light entering through the windshield of a car. The back side of the detector has a rectangular window made of SiO2 material which helps in the protection of the detector without affecting the sensitivity. The detector also has a built-in amplifier and hence requires no external bias voltage for proper operation.
The working principle of PDB-C603-3 Photodetector is fairly straight forward. When light enters into the N-type semiconductor window, it is converted into an electric current. This current is then passed on to the amplifier which in turn amplifies this signal. This amplified signal is then passed onto the N-type semiconductor layer of the Photodetector, which then in turn increases the resistance of the layer. This increased resistance aids in an increased current flow which is then measured externally. The current measurement is then used to detect the presence of light inside the vehicle.
The Photodetector is primarily used for intensity measurement of light. It has a photosensitivity of 0.25 ~ 1.02A/W and a small dark current. The detector also has a high signal-to- noise ratio, making it suitable for use in telecommunications, automobiles, astronomy, biometrics, biomedical and optical imaging applications. It has a frequency response of 1kHz and can operate over a temperature range of -20°C to +30°C.
The PDB-C603-3 Photodetector is also a low-cost solution and is quite easy to install. Its compact size also makes it suitable for tight spaces that may be found in a vehicle. Moreover, the low power consumption makes it energy efficient. Therefore, the PDB-C603-3 Photodetector proves to be an essential component in a range of different applications.
