Common Mode Chokes
Common mode chokes, sometimes referred to as line isolation transformers, are sourced electrical components primarily used on AC line-powered circuits to prevent or mitigate unwanted high frequency noise. Depending on their internal structure, they are classified as either common mode chokes or line filters. Common mode chokes specifically conduct common mode noise currents between multiple ports. In essence, they are inductors that have been carefully wound to prevent noise currents from propagating past a certain frequency.
The PE-1206CCMC102STS is a specific type of common mode choke designed to attenuate high-frequency electromagnetic or radio frequency interference, also known as EMI/RFI. It is specifically designed to handle frequencies from 500 KHz to 1 GHz, perfect for applications that demand higher frequency blocking such as in telecommunications, computing, cloud technologies, medical imaging, imaging components, and aerospace systems. This specific part can take up to 2 amps of current and provides an isolation voltage of 500VDC.
These kinds of inductors are based off of the concept of self-inductance in which an alternating magnetic field is formed when current flows through a coil of wire. This field will induce a voltage to any other conductor that cuts it, which if kept in wire will induce a current back into the coil. This is basically how a transformer works, whether it be an audio-transformer, power transformer, or an inductor like the PE-1206CCMC102STS. The main purpose of a common mode choke in a circuit is to block the conductors of the AC line voltage from interacting with other sensitive components. This in turn prevents high current spikes, voltage fluctuations, and random noise predominantly from radio frequencies from messing up a circuit and/or other surrounding circuits.
In terms of consumer electronics, common mode chokes are especially useful in domestic powered electronics such as laptops and cell phones. Common mode chokes typically use 4 wires coiled around a ferrite core for maximized blocking capabilities and also come with various useful features such as an operating temperature range and response time which are essential characteristics for any kind of power filter or signal processing device. These common mode chokes become even more important for ITE (Information Technology Equipment) and medical use as there are more sensitive systems and components at risk of getting corrupted from high frequency noise.
Though the PE-1206CCMC102STS is not ideal for any higher frequency applications, it can still be considered an effective block of most EMI/RFI noise within it\'s frequency range and will usually be able to provide the necessary isolation and blocking for most applications. The key features of this common mode choke are the wide frequency range, high amount of current the inductor can handle, and the 500VDC isolation voltage. These features make it a great choice for audio filtering, signal degradation prevention, and signal isolation for any application that utilizes AC line power.
