Film capacitors are commonly used within electronic circuit designs as they can withstand a wide range of operating environments. This is because unlike traditional ceramic capacitors, film capacitors are constructed using a thin dielectric polyester film instead of ceramic. This dielectric material is very stable and therefore better suited to higher temperatures and stronger physical stresses encountered in some applications. The construction of the PHE845VD6100MR30L2 is based around a two layer setup. On the inner layer, the electrodes are coated in an insulation material which helps to ensure that there is no shorting of the plates. The dielectric film is then rolled up and placed in between the two electrodes and the outer casing which is usually made from ABS or PET plastic. This assembly is then potted in a non-conductive resin which further protects the capacitor from external elements.
The working principle of a film capacitor is relatively straightforward. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, it causes the dielectric material to become polarized which then distributes the charge evenly throughout the capacitor. This produces an electrostatic field which stores the electrical energy and allows it to be used for other applications. Of course, as the voltage applied to the capacitor changes, the electrostatic field and capacitance also change accordingly which in turn affects the energy that can be stored.
