Fixed Inductors

Fixed inductors, also known as coils or chokes, are electronic components consisting of conducting wires wound around a core that store energy from an electric current as a magnetic field. This makes them essential in different aspects of a circuit as part of their function is to limit or block the transition of current either in a steady state or within a certain frequency range. While inductors employ a variety of cores such as iron powder, ferrite, air, laminated steel, and ceramic, they are often classified according to the construction technique used for winding the wire into a coil.

PL8101NLT Application Field and Working Principle

The PL8101NLT is a surface-mount fixed inductor characterized by high inductance and low current rating. With a footprint of only 5 mm x 5 mm, the chip inductor offers a 20 % reduction in volume compared to conventional inductors with a larger size. The product is ideal for use in applications requiring a high frequency operation with moderate current requirements such as 3G mobile phones, satellite communications, and LCD TVs.

The product employs a low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrate and multiple copper wires for winding and is rated for both a maximum operating temperature of 110 °C, and an ambient temperature up to 125°C. Its small size allows it to be mounted directly onto a printed circuit board (PCB), making it a highly reliable and cost-effective option for applications in which space is a concern.

In terms of its working principle, the PL8101NLT uses two separate windings of copper wire to create a magnetic field, which is then converted into electricity by the inductor\'s core. This process is known as magnetic induction and effectively generates an alternating current. As the current flows through the windings, a magnetic field is generated at the center of the inductor. This field further increases in strength as the magnitude of the current increases, and as a consequence, the magnetic flux linked to the windings also increases.

This process, known as self-induction, is due to the fact that when the current is increased, the induced magnetic field generates a force which prevents the flow of additional current through the inductor thus maintaining a steady state and limiting the amount of current accustomed. This is also known as the “back-EMF” effect and is essential in keeping regulated levels of current flowing through the device.

In addition, the inductor also utilizes a copper-plated ferrite core which further increases the efficiency of the device. The copper plating increases the maximum current rating while the ferrite core helps reduce the losses associated with the inductor, thus increasing the device’s performance when compared to traditional inductors.

In terms of their application, fixed inductors, such as the PL8101NLT, are used in a wide variety of electronics systems. The device’s small size make it ideal for use in space-sensitive designs such as those found in mobile phones, laptops, and portable media players.
