Working Principle

PM-R64P photointerrupters employ a slot type structure for the sensing of objects passing along it. The light emitted from the emitter is transmitted across the slot gap to the detector, where differences between the transmitted light and the reflected light are used to detect the presence of the object. When no object is present in the slot gap, a constant flow of light is transmitted from the emitter to the detector and the corresponding amount of light is reflected. Conversely, when an object interrupts the transmitted light, either a reduction or complete prevention will occur, depending on the size and localization of the object. This change of light levels is then detected by the phototransistor in the PM-R64P to provide a switch contactor output. Depending on the model, PM-R64P photointerrupters are either offered in a photocoupler or a direct transistor output configuration. The photocoupler model operates independently of the voltage, enabling the switching functions of the datasheet to be used in various circuit arrangements. By contrast, the direct transistor output model operates on an output voltage of 6 to 32 volts, has higher sensitivity compared to the photocoupler model, and is recommended for simpler circuits.
