PPTC312LFBN Application Field and Working Principle
PPTC312LFBN, or Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient Resettable Fuses, are rectangular connectors belonging to the category of Headers, Receptacles, Female Sockets. This kind of device is commonly used in the fields of industrial and domestic electronic products, such as computer systems, communication equipment, audiovisual system, and industrial control system.
The device is a two-terminal PTC resettable fuse with the characteristics of high-current, low-temperature dependence, low-self-resistance, and large current width. The components are mainly composed of a polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) element and a metal shell. When the PPTC element is locked with the metal shell, it will close the current circuit. When the current rises due to external environment or tool vibration, the PPTC element will become warmer and reduce the current through it and then keep the current at the rated current. In addition, the fuse will automatically reset after the current drops in about 10 minutes.

When it comes to the working principle, PPTC312LFBN works in a way that the device is composed of two electrodes. The PTC element consists of many conductive particles dispersed in the polymer. When the device is working, the conductive particles will form an unhindered conduction channel between the two electrodes, allowing current to flow through. When the current is too high, the temperature of the PTC element will rise. The particles in the PTC elements will become larger, increasing the resistance that will reduce the current.
With the temperature going higher, the particles will become larger and larger, thus resulting in more resistance and leading to a complete interruption of the current. The PPTC device will eventually reset when the temperature reduces. This is the circuit protection mechanism of the PPTC312LFBN.
