Thermal - Thermoelectric, Peltier Modules
Thermoelectric modules, also known as Peltier modules, are devices which use thermoelectric effects to generate a temperature differential between two surfaces. By using the Peltier effect, a temperature difference is created between two sides of the module when an electric current is passed through it. They use the Peltier effect, which states that when two metals with different temperatures, or a thermoelectric junction, are connected to a temperature and electric potential gradient across the junction, the material with the higher temperature will absorb heat, while the material with the lower temperature will release heat. This effect can result in either cooling or heating when the current is reversed. The direction of the flow of heat is determined by the direction of the current.
Thermoelectric modules have many applications in the field of temperature measurement and control. They are commonly used for cooling or heating of electronic components and sensitive materials, such as medical materials. In medical applications, Peltier modules are used to rapidly cool or heat tissue and fluids for purposes such as cryo and hyperthermia therapy. In industry, thermoelectrics are also used for transportation of hazardous materials, or for diagnostic testing of production lines. Thermoelectric modules are also used in the automotive industry for engine and transmission cooling, and for exhaust emission control. Finally, thermoelectrics are used in the home for cooling food and drinks, or for heating or cooling blankets and mattresses.
In addition to cooling, heating, and temperature control, the Peltier effect can also be used for other purposes. It can be used to generate electric power, as well as to drive other processes, such as the movement of robots and other machinery. Peltier modules are also used in energy harvesting applications, where the heat generated by the module is used to generate electricity from a thermally charged material such as a metal, a piece of wood, a semiconductor, or even a solid-state battery.
The working principle of a thermoelectric module is fairly simple. The module contains two ceramic plates, called Peltier plates, that are each fitted with an array of tiny thermoelectric elements. These elements are made of p-doped and n-doped semiconductor materials, such as boron and phosphorus. When an electric current is applied across the two plates, the p-doped elements will absorb heat from one plate, while the n-doped elements will release heat to the other plate. The result is a temperature difference between the two plates, depending on the amount of current applied. The thermoelectric module can be used to either heat or cool a material by reversing the electrical current, depending on the desired temperature.
Thermoelectric modules are a versatile and reliable tool for temperature measurement and control. They are highly efficient and reliable, and their cost is relatively low compared to other types of cooling or heating systems. And, with the advent of high-efficiency thermoelectric materials and components, thermoelectric modules are becoming even more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective cooling and heating solutions.
