RF Power Dividers/Splitters

RF power dividers, or splitters, are essential components in the transmission and reception of radio waves, allowing for signals to be diverted in multiple directions. The PWD-5532-08-NNN-79, specifically, is a type of power divider, designed to operate over a frequency range of 5 to 32 GHz. This model is offered in four different configurations: N = 1, 2, 4, or 8, with nominal insertion loss less than 8dB, similar to other power dividers.

Application Field

In general, power dividers are widely used in a large variety of applications. This includes the direction of signals in wireless communication systems for both land- and space-based systems. The use of these dividers allows for radio signals to be routed to multiple antennas, whether to an array of antenna for beamforming, transmitting multiple signals simultaneously (for Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum DS-SS communications) or to keep a receiver constantly tuned to a targetted frequency without interruption. As such, the applications field for RF power dividers is extensive and can be seen in applications such telecommunications, radar systems, automation systems, GPS receivers and antenna systems.

Working Principle

Power dividers are based on the general concept of wave division, which is the distribution of an incoming signal among multiple paths. Power dividers such as the PWD-5532-08-NNN-79 operate similarly to many passive resistive divider circuits. The frequency response and performance of the PWD-5532-08-NNN-79 can be adjusted through the insertion of reactive elements (such as capacitors and inductors) as well as resistive elements (such as resistors and ESD diodes). While the design of various power dividers may vary greatly, the most common designs are based on either Wilkinson or hybrid dividers, although various other designs exist with differing levels of performance characteristics.

Wilkinson dividers utilize a series of quarter-wave transmission lines, arranged in a network. These networks form a “T” configuration with a central power combiner/splitter at the center. The input is split and distributed among the output ports across this network, each port consisting of cascaded quarter-wave transmission lines. This allows for an essentially equal split to a certain input frequency. In the PWD-5532-08-NNN-79, resistive elements are built into the Wilkinson network in order to reduce the insertion loss.

In contrast, hybrid power dividers utilize a more complicated set of networks, made up of both resistive and reactive components. These components are designed to create a more balanced power split, as well as to reduce the return loss and insertion loss of the system. The main advantage of hybrid devices is the ability to provide a good frequency response over a wide range of frequencies.

In contrast to active power dividers, passive devices does not require an external power source in order to operate. As such, these components are generally lightweight, low cost, and require minimal maintenance over their lifetime. For the 5 to 32 GHz range, PWD-5532-08-NNN-79 offers a good choice for both performance and convenience.
