LED Indication, also known as Discrete Status Indication, is a necessity for many industries and applications, ranging from industrial and machine automation, to aerospace applications. The QBLP653-Y LED Indicator from RoHS and UL certified manufacturer Kingbright, is designed for commercial and industrial applications where the design of discretely controlled LED light functionality is needed.
The QBLP653-Y LED Indicator is a two-color LED device with a 3-lead, right angle lens housing plastic package. This unit features a red and yellow LED and is capable of achieving reliable operation at temperatures ranging from -40°C to +105°C.
The QBLP153-Y utilizes AlGaAs technology, which is an adequate cost efficient choice for applications that implement red/green, red/yellow, yellow/green bi-color design. This increases the efficiency of the package due to the fact that bi-color and combined packages are one single device rather than two. The two colors of light are emitted on-off simultaneously and utilize pulse-width modulation (PWM) to dim the light.
The working principle of the QBLP653-Y LED Indicator is through a set of signals, or inputs, sent to the LED. Depending on the effects desired by the design, the LED can be either on, dimmed to a desired level, off, or blinking. Inputs sent to the LED should be as high as possible, since the LED will only switch on and off as the input is changed. This is referred to as a “switching” pulse, and is the most common input for many LED indicators.
The QBLP653-Y LED Indicator is rated for a continuous forward current of 10mA, with a maximum forward voltage of 2V. In order to switch the LED to the correct level, the input must ascend to the LED’s forward voltage. If the voltage is lower, the LED may not turn on or have inadequate brightness; however, if the voltage exceeds 2V, the LED can be at risk for permanent damage. The pulse-width must then be adjusted to the desired voltage at various points along the payload, eventually controlling the entire LED output.
For applications where the LED Indicator needs to be dimmed rather than on/off, a PWM signal may be used. This signal instructs the LED to turn on and off in milliseconds, allowing the level of brightness to be controlled. The QBLP653-Y utilizes a 10-bit PWM which allows for 1024 possible input levels, increasing the accuracy of dimming and brightness control. Similarly, the pulse must ascend to the LED’s forward voltage in order to achieve the desired brightness throughout the entire payload.
The QBLP653-Y LED Indicator is designed for use in a variety of applications, ranging from industrial and machine automation, to aerospace and home use. Its two-color design and 10-bit PWM feedback allow for reliable light output and dimming control in both indoor and outdoor settings. Despite its small size and cost-efficiency, the unit provides reliable temperature ratings of -40°C to +105°C and maximum current and voltage ratings of 10mA and 2V.
