Introduction

QFS-052-04.25-L-D-A-GP-P (“QFS”) is an array-style, edge type, mezzanine connector which was released to the market by Amphenol in 2010 as a hybrid combination of both an array-style and mezzanine connector product. The connector is designed to provide fast and reliable connection between two PCBs and is designed to be specifically flexible to interface with a range of modules including signals, power, and data. It features an innovative+ design which provides an array of terminals on a 0.025” pitch, which is then combined with standard mezzanine-style outward-facing contacts in order to provide greater ease-of-use.

Applications

QFS connectors have been adopted in a variety of industries and applications, due to their versatile design. Aerospace and defense industries are the largest adopters of the technology, having combined them with microelectronic modules or signal transmission applications. Additionally, they have found a place in general electronics for use in motor control, medical, robotics, and other signal transmission-oriented applications. Multi-level board-to-board applications are possible with the technology, which provides the reliability and signal continuity of surface mounting with the standard pitch of a mezzanine-style connector.

Design and Features

The design of the QFS connector consists of a vertical array of outward-facing contacts on a standard 0.025’’ pitch. The array, or block of contacts, is mounted onto an insulating base, which provides a secure and reliable base for the structure. The encapsulating base is then connected to a secondary header, which provides further structural integrity and stability. One of the unique features of this connector is the “angle” feature, which allows for optimal air flow within the package as well as greater ease-of-use when mounting the device. The connector contains a key cut-out, which permits only one orientation of the device and prevents incorrect mating. The device is also designed for easy disconnection and reconnection via its latch mechanism, which activates when the header and its mating bridge are aligned.

Working Principle

The functionality of the QFS connector relies upon a few basic principles which ensure that the device is able to transfer signals reliably and accurately from one board to the other. It requires the presence of both an electrical current and a capacitive or inductive element. The electrical current is carried through the electrical contacts, which on the QFS connector are located on the outer edge of the array-style header. The capacitive or inductive element is created by the presence of a dielectric plate which separates the electrical contacts from one another. The dielectric plate acts as an insulator, so that the electrical signals do not short out, and it also allows for a more consistent impedance along the line, which is important for efficient and accurate transmission.

Conclusion

QFS-052-04.25-L-D-A-GP-P is an example of a versatile mezzanine-style connector which has been designed with both reliability and ease-of-use in mind. Its combination of standard mezzanine outward-facing contacts and an array-style header makes the device ideally suited for board-to-board applications, particularly in signal transmission industries. The innovative design of the device ensures a reliable connection between two printed circuit boards while still providing the user with an easy disconnection and reconnection process. The QFS connector also relies upon a basic working principle which ensures an efficient and accurate transfer of signals between two boards.
