Film Capacitors

A film capacitor, or plastic film capacitor, is a capacitor constructed with a film of plastic as the dielectric. This type of capacitor is also known as a Polyester capacitor, Mylar capacitor or Metallized Polyester Film capacitor. The dielectric is composed of threads of film in a rectangular shape, with alternating, parallel strips of metal foil electrodes which are then heat-sealed into a single, metallized layer within a plastic case.

One of the most common types of film capacitors is the Polypropylene Film capacitor, also referred to as a PP film capacitor. It has a layer of metal foil electrodes embedded into the dielectric of a film. The metal foil electrodes are made of either aluminum, or stainless steel with a nickel coating. The metal electrode layer is then sealed with a 3M heat shrinkable tape and a heat sealant.
