The RDK-128 is an Evaluation, Development and Prototyping Kit (EDPK) used for demonstration purposes in order to debug, evaluate and demonstrate the capabilities of the Atmel microcontroller AT91SAM3S8C. Packaged facilities include 8 ADC/DAC/PWM modules, two UARTS, plus a full library of C code examples among other features. The kit owns an onboard debugger board seated on top of the SOCK-128 board through a microSD connector, allowing the user to connect to the Atmel microcontroller AT91SAM3S8C, issuing commands and data through a command line interface or more formally with an ATMEL Studio. The jtag connector on the SOCK-128 board allows for full visual observation and control through the EDAS – Atmel Evaluation Studio, all of this in order to evaluate the performance and capabilities of the AT91SAM3S8C.

The RDK-128 working principle is based on the Atmel AVR microcontroller system-based architecture. This architecture uses two distinct logical components: the main processor and the I/O. The main processor is responsible for tasks like data handling and communication, while the I/O manages the input/output operations of the system. The Atmel EDK provides a board capable of interfacing with external components such as a keyboard, monitor, and related peripherals. The architecture provides the necessary infrastructure for communication between the processor and I/O components.

The RDK-128 application field is quite broad; from educational laboratories up to embedded applications. An educational environment allows the user to explore the AT91SAM3S8C microcontroller by running the provided code examples and tutorial interfaces. An engineer in the design process of a given embedded system can use the RDK-128 to fine-tune the architecture, evaluate the performance and debug the code before deploying the system.

From the Python development point of view, the RDK-128 has been successfully tested with "MicroPython" to evaluate the capabilities of the board. MicroPython is a full featured Python implementation for microcontrollers, including the AT91SAM3S8C, aiming to satisfy the needs of the embedded programmer with speed, power, and size optimizations. Python allows to quickly create homebrew IoT applications and reap the benefits of the AT91SAM3S8C power management features, both related to energy saving and smart power design.

The RDK-128 Evaluative and Prototyping Kit allows also to interact with the Atmel device using a smart phone, being a powerful complement to the kit capabilities. Other outstanding features of the RDK-128 are its flash memory management, enabling the user to store up to 128kb in flash memory, the audio codec onboard, providing the user with up to three codecs (A-D/D-A conversion) for the audio sample processing.

The RDK-128 Evaluative and Prototyping Kit is a powerful tool for developers, allowing to evaluate the capabilities of the Atmel AT91SAM3S8C microcontroller. This EDPK is deployed in educational programs, embedded systems design process, or Internet of Things development. The onboard debugger board, its software interface (EDAS – Atmel Evaluation Studio) will allow the user to interact, control and debug the microcontroller efficiently. The RDK-128 also implements a set of powerful features, such as flash memory and audio codecs, granting the user the necessary facilities for advanced applications.
