The RDK-83 from Recom is an evaluation board for DC/DC & AC/DC (off-line) SMPS. The power supply evaluation board has a wide output voltage range of 0 to 36 VDC and offers automatic step-down functionality as well as overcurrent protection and soft-start. The board also features a control unit that can be connected to a separate power supply or system, as well as a Heat Sink/Fan Module (HSFM) for proper heat dissipation. The board can be used in many applications, including server power, test and measurement, automotive, and medical.

The RDK-83 is designed to deliver highly precise outputs, providing excellent load and line regulation performance as well as temperature stability. The built-in overcurrent protection (OCP) function is designed to protect downstream components from excessive current loads. Additionally, the SMPS performance is further enhanced by a soft-start circuitry which helps reduce current inrush and discharge of the internal storage capacitors during start-up.

The board is equipped with an LCD display that shows the output voltage and current settings; the power supply can be monitored and adjusted either manually or remotely through a PC interface. The RDK-83 also features adjustable tracking to ensure that the output voltage maintains a minimum voltage difference when loaded to different levels of current.

The working principle of the RDK-83 is based on an integrated full-bridge rectifier circuit that converts a DC input to an AC output voltage. The AC signal is then fed to a chopper regulator located inside the board, where the voltage is actively controlled by a master oscillator and a feedback loop. The output voltage is then monitored and adjusted using the integrated LCD display.

In addition to its versatile output settings, the RDK-83 is equipped with an automatic protection circuit that prevents the power supply from being overloaded and overheated. The internal voltage and current regulation system helps to maintain a precise output voltage, even in adverse conditions. The board is also protected against short circuit and overcurrent conditions, and the HSFM module provides an effective cooling system.
