REF5040 is a Precision Micropower Voltage Reference designed to provide a high-accuracy, stable output voltage with minimal current consumption. The device serves as a reference for regulating voltage- and current-sensitive applications, and its micropower operation makes it suitable for powering wireless sensor nodes and for other battery-powered systems.
The REF5040 features an output voltage of 4.096 V with an operating current ranging from 500 nA up to 1.5 µA. The device operates from a single supply voltage from 2.7 V to 5.5 V, and can cope with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, making it suitable for a variety of applications.
The REF5040 offers high accuracy, low noise, and low drift. With a 2-electrode voltage reference, the device\'s output voltage will drift less than 0.05 mV/°C in the operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, along with an initial accuracy of 0.15% maximum. Moreover, with current sources as low as 500 nA and its precision over temperature, the REF5040 can provide low noise output voltages, making it ideal for precision analog signal conditioning applications.
The REF5040 can be used in the TVS diode protection circuit of power supply and the power clamp circuit of high-speed cable modem. It can also be used for ADC, DAC, peak detectors calibration, and reference voltage for comparators in power supply management and battery charger, battery monitor circuits and high-accuracy temperature measurement/control systems like data acquisition and CPU thermal control.
The working principle of the REF5040 is based on a classic Zener diode. The Zener diode is a diode device, which is reverse biased, meaning that there is a larger voltage applied in the reverse direction than would be the case in the forward direction. The Zener diode has the characteristic that when the reverse biased voltage gets above the breakdown voltage, current will flow. The REF5040 uses this feature to regulate an output voltage to 4.096V.
The REF5040 device uses a bandgap voltage reference circuit, which is made up of two precision diodes and a resistor divider. The two precision equal diodes are connected in series and are reverse biased by a voltage from the resistor divider network. When the voltage from the resistor network reaches a certain amount, they begin to conduct and the two diodes work as one diode and the voltage remains constant. The current flowing through the two diodes is then used by the output transistors to regulate the output voltage to a fixed 4.096V reference.
The REF5040\'s operating temperature range of -40ºC to +125ºC ensure that the voltage stabilization is maintained at all temperatures. Additionally, the REF5040\'s low current consumption, which is up to 1.5µA, greatly reduces power consumption.
