DC-DC converters are electrical systems designed to convert a specific type of electrical energy–typically DC–into a different voltage. In general, DC converters are used to change the voltage of a given voltage range and provide a constant voltage output regardless of input voltage variations. An example of a common DC converter is the RKZ-2412D. This short DC-DC converter converts a DC voltage of 0-24V with a maximum output of 12V. Designed for low power consumption applications, the converter operates in either a Linear or Pulsed-Mode and offers a high level of power regulation with minimal noise distortion.

The RKZ-2412D works by using one of two operating modes: Linear or Pulsed-Mode. This is dependent upon the input voltage and power requirements. In the Linear-Mode, the input voltage is balanced with an active circuit, while the active circuit provides the output voltage. The output voltage is set by an internal reference resistor, allowing the user to make necessary adjustments to maintain the ideal output voltage. Max current output for Linear-Mode modes is 1.25A.

In the Pulsed-Mode, the converter constantly switches between two voltage levels. It rapidly switches between an input voltage and a lower voltage which is generally half the input voltage. This allows for increased efficiency and power output of up to 100W. The switching frequency can be adjusted to meet the needs of the user. Input voltage range for pulsed mode is from 10 to 24 volts, and the output voltage is 12V.

An additional feature of the RKZ-2412D is current monitoring, which allows the user to monitor the current flowing through the output circuit. The current monitor is enabled by a voltage level across Zener diode ZD1. When the current exceeds the predetermined level, the Zener diode begins to conduct, and the voltage between the two terminals of the Zener diode increases which is detected by a current shunt sensor. The sensor then converts the voltage into a current signal that can be read by the user.

This converter is used in a wide range of applications, ranging from medical and industrial applications to consumer electronics.
