Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) are essential components of modern electronic systems. Their function is to protect electronic systems from electrical overstress due to transient voltage spikes. Varistors, Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) and Transient Voltage Suppressor Diodes (TVSDs) are three primary types of TVS devices used in today’s circuitry. Each type serves different purposes and performs differently. We will take a closer look at ROV07-331K-2, a popular Varistor.
ROV07-331K-2 is a Radial Leaded Varistor, which is ideal for protecting AC power lines such as motor drives and UPS systems. It is composed of a sintered zinc oxide material that helps protect electronic systems against transient voltage spikes. Its operating voltage is between 270 volts AC to 8300 volts AC, and its maximum current is up to 3.2 amps. It is also designed to be able to withstand temperatures ranging from -40℃ to +130 ℃.
The ROV07-331K-2 works by providing a low, constant resistance across the circuit and dissipating large energy spikes as heat. When a transient voltage spike occurs, the Varistor’s unique sintered zinc oxide material quickly changes its resistance from low to a high value, allowing the unwanted current to be dissipated as heat. This heat is then dissipated from the device, leaving the circuit protected from the effects of the transient voltage.
Varistors work best when connected to a known and consistent voltage source. For circuits with fluctuating voltage, such as motor drives and UPS systems, the Varistor will not be able to protect the system as reliably from transient voltage spikes. In cases such as this, it is recommended to use Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs).
MOVs are designed to provide protection against transient voltage spikes by utilizing a zinc oxide pellet that changes its resistance when a surge is present. This change in resistance diverts the energy from the surge away from the circuit, providing extra protection for the system. The MOVs also have the added benefit of being able to operate at higher voltages than Varistors, and they are able to provide protection up to thousands of volts.
In addition to Varistors and MOVs, Transient Voltage Suppressor Diodes (TVSDs) are also commonly used in electronic systems. TVSDs are designed to provide protection against transient voltage spikes by clamping the voltage at a predetermined voltage level. This level is usually fixed at a value that is high enough to prevent any damage to the circuit, but low enough that the circuit is not disabled.
In conclusion, Varistors, MOVs, and TVSDs are three of the most important components of any modern electronic system. Varistors such as ROV07-331K-2 are designed for providing protection against transient voltage spikes, while MOVs and TVSDs can provide protection at higher voltages. These three types of devices are invaluable in protecting electronic systems from potential damage due to transient voltage spikes.
The ROV07-331K-2 Varistor is a unique and highly reliable device designed for protecting AC power lines. It operates by providing a low, constant resistance across the circuit and dissipating large energy spikes as heat. Its wide operating voltage range and high temperature range make it ideal for protecting electronic systems from damages due to transient voltage spikes.
