.DC-DC converters are widely used in the design of systems and controllers. Their purpose is to convert a variable voltage input to a constant voltage output or, depending on the application, to generate a DC voltage from a DC source. The use of DC-DC converters has become increasingly popular due to their cost-effectiveness in providing regulated voltage and operating efficiency. One popular DC-DC converter which has become widely used is the RSD-3.315/P-R.
The RSD-3.315/P-R is a step down switching converter which is designed to convert a higher input voltage to a lower regulated output. The input voltage range is from 3.15 up to 7.5 Volts DC. The output voltage is a constant 3.3 Volts DC, which can drive loads up to 3 Amps. The switching frequency of the converter is also adjustable and can be set anywhere from 100KHz to 200KHz.
The RSD-3.315/P-R converter utilizes a high-frequency oscillator which is used to generate the switching signals for the two drivers which are responsible for the switching of the output. This oscillator is based on the Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) technique. The switching cycle is determined by the frequency setting while the duty cycle is directly correlated to the input voltage. When the duty cycle is varied, the output voltage is adjusted accordingly. The output voltage is also regulated through a feedback loop which is based on an error amplifier and an opto-coupler. This loop works by comparing the output voltage to the reference voltage from an internal reference. If there is any variation in the output voltage, the error amplifier will send a signal to the opto-coupler, which in turn adjusts the duty cycle setting of the oscillator and thus adjusts the output voltage to the correct value.
The RSD-3.315/P-R is also designed with short-circuit protection and output over-voltage protection features. The short-circuit protection uses a circuit breaker and sense transformer which will disconnect the load at the event of a short circuit. The output over-voltage protection limits the maximum voltage output of the converter to 4 Volts to prevent damage to the load. The output voltage will return to normal levels when the over-voltage dissipates.
The RSD-3.315/P-R converter is commonly used in battery-operated devices, such as cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and other portable consumer electronics. It is also used in many medical and industrial applications.
