PTC Resettable Fuses are known for their ability to protect circuits from over-current or over-temperature conditions. The working principle of the RTE135-2 relies on the temperature dependence of the current and temperature sensing resistors, as well as the use of a specific switch to actuate the thermal protection action. When a fault condition occurs, the current sensing resistor (R1) senses the rise in temperature and redirects the flow of current away from its normal route. As the temperature of the sensing resistor rises, it causes the resistance to increase until eventually it reaches the pre-determined limit. At this point, the switch located between the sensing resistor and the temperature sensing thermistor will be triggered, causing the current to be diverted away from the circuit.
The temperature sensing thermistor (R2) is a variable-value resistive element that can be thermally tuned over a wide range of temperatures. When the current sensing resistor senses a fault, this element will be trained to reduce the current, thereby providing reliable thermal protection. This allows the PTC Resettable Fuse to reset its own thermal protection rating after a fault has been cleared, ensuring the continued safety of the protected circuit.
By combining the two elements of the RTE135-2, the current sensing resistor and the temperature sensing thermistor, manufacturers are able to ensure safe and reliable thermal protection for circuits exposed to over-current or over-temperature conditions. This type of fuse is an excellent choice for applications where reliable thermal protection is essential.
