DC-to-DC converters (DC-DC) are integrated circuitry that transform a direct current (DC) from one voltage level or circuit to another, enabling voltage regulation and eliminating components like transformers, thereby saving space and reducing costs. The RUM050505/H is a poly-phase synchronous step-down DC-DC converter that provides power-conversion efficiency of up to 95 percent.

Working Principle

The synchronous DC-DC converter is based on a trickle-down principle, which works by creating an inductive link between the input voltage and the output voltage. The input current is drawn through two transistors attached to the primary of a pulse transformer. When a voltage pulse is applied to one of the transistors, the input current starts to flow through it and creates a magnetic field in the transformer. After this initial pulse is applied the transistors switch in a continuous cycle, where the input current is alternately transferred from one transistor to the other. This creates the output voltage by rectifying the output of the voltage waveform generated by the pulse transformer.

The RUM050505/H employs a unique switching technology which enables it to regulate the output voltage with lower noise and allows dynamically adjusting the output current delivery performance. The built-in active control circuit also provides high-frequency synchronous rectification, improved power factor, improved efficiency, and improved line transient performance.

The active control circuit includes a primary switch, secondary switch, voltage regulator, waveform control circuit, and current limit circuit. The primary switch is used to regulate active current and the secondary switch is used as a transistor to control the output voltage. The voltage regulator senses the output voltage and gives feedback for the waveform control circuit in order to maintain the output voltage constant. The waveform controls circuit maintains the accurate output voltage and includes a high-frequency oscillator and switching controller. The current limit circuit makes sure the output current does not exceed the rated current.

The RUM050505/H also features a digital soft-start function which helps reduce inrush current and keeps power conversions smoother. It also features output over voltage protection, output short circuit protection, as well as over temperature protection.
