S-8200AAY-M6T1U Application Field and Working Principle

S-8200AAY-M6T1U is a switching power supply used for low voltage battery charge and boost management. It is capable of providing Charge Power (CHRG) from 5V USB power supply or from power sources such as 3V Coin cell battery, 0.9V Coin cell battery, or Primary battery High Voltage (HV). It can effectively protect the battery from being overcharged, over-discharged, over-voltage protection, over-current protection and short-circuit protection. The device is an ideal solution for applications such as mobile phone, MP3, portable gaming device and Smart toy that are powered by a single cell Li-ion battery.

The S-8200AAY-M6T1U is designed with an integrated M6T1U power supply IC, power MOS FET, operation amplifier and charge control circuit. The integrated power supply IC (called M6T1U) integrates the high voltage DC-DC converter, the low voltage DC-DC converter and the charge control circuit. The chip also includes a low power boost control circuit to control the boost for the battery supplying power in sleep/standby mode. The integrated power supply IC can provide the required voltage and current for charging and adjusting the voltage from the input power source.

The boost control circuit is responsible for providing necessary boost for the low voltage Vout of the M6T1U power supply IC to protect the battery from over-discharge. The boosting process can be activated by a control signal from the control unit, which is composed of a voltage reference, voltage and current monitor, and logic control, as shown in Figure. When the voltage of the battery drops below the limit, the boost control circuit will be triggered and start the boosting process. The boosting process will be terminated when the battery voltage reaches the predetermined value.

The voltage reference and voltage and current monitor will detect the output voltage of the battery and the charging current, when it is necessary to adjust the voltage. The logic control will generate the control signal for controlling the current flow to the battery and terminate the charging process if needed.
