The S-8204AAL-TCT1U is a high performance comprehensive power management device (PMIC) addressing single-cell lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery applications. It includes a battery charge controller, a power select circuit, switch controller and a system reset for low power applications.
The device is well-suited for battery-powered products such as smartphone, tablet and other portable devices. The high integration design allows for a simple, small, and cost efficient solution. The maximum ratings of the device are 2.5V up to 6.5V and 0 to 6A, with temperature range from -40°C to +125°C.
Application Field
The S-8204AAL-TCT1U supports a single cell Li-ion/Li-polymer battery charging with a Constant Voltage/Constant Current (CC/CV) charge profile and with a Charge Termination Current (CTC) of 1.0A. Additionally, it has an internal DC/DC regulator to power a System/Application Subsystem from the battery (with suitable features for higher battery life), and a power select circuit for optimum current source between system and/or battery.
The device has a safety & monitoring feature (S&M) comparing input voltage, battery voltage and system voltage to prevent reversed battery insertion, over discharge and over voltage on system voltage. It also supports a power on/off reset circuit based on the battery voltage and system voltage.
The S-8204AAL-TCT1U has a typical power stand-by current of 3μA with a wide input voltage range to support longer battery life. It also has over-current protection with 40dB gain to support higher current applications. Moreover, the device has a low ripple charge characteristic to allow an extended battery life.
Working Principle
In order to charge a single cell Li-Ion battery more efficiently, the S-8204AAL-TCT1U employs Constant Voltage/Constant Current (CV/CC) charging system with Charge Termination Current (CTC) of 1.0A.
The device employs an Internal DC/DC converter to regulate the battery voltage and ensure a stable output to power the System/Application Subsystem. It has a power select circuit which allows the user to select the optimum current source between the system and/or battery.
The safety and monitoring feature of the S-8204AAL-TCT1U compares input voltage, battery voltage and system voltage to prevent reversed battery insertion, over discharge, and over-voltage on system voltage. Additionally, it has a power on/off reset circuit based on the battery voltage and system voltage.
